London City Lionesses Showcase Improvement In Loss
If the London City coach needed an example of the progress his London City Lionesses have come in the past few weeks, Saturday's match against Chelsea provided exactly that. The game concluded in a 2-0 defeat to the champions, but his side performed admirably at their opponent's ground and raised multiple challenges for the title holders. London City controlled nearly half the ball – perhaps more than expected – and managed the same number of shots on target (3), with Isobel Goodwin offering a particular threat with her forward runs. “When we compare to earlier in the season when we played other top-four opposition, it was really good,” Prêcheur commented. “The encouraging aspect is that we start to see a team – that was the primary objective. We observed a team that protected and pushed forward as one. We still need to improve.”
Liverpool ‘Will Keep Fighting’
Liverpool’s manager, Gareth Taylor, issued a rallying call to the squad as the search for their first points continues. Following a further loss, on this occasion 2-1 at the expense of Spurs, he stated: “We have to battle through it. Our focus is clear. We’re working so hard to turn this into a improved position but it requires a bit of time and a bit of support. Sadly, currently, we’re getting knocked, but we are determined to persevere.” On the face of it, it was an even encounter at Brisbane Road – with comparable ball control, chances created and opportunities – but after taking an early lead, the visitors played lacking intensity as Spurs executed a comeback. It was another concerning example of Liverpool's tendency to fall away in games, surely the main focus for the coach to address if he is to turn their fortunes around.
Kirby and Kiko Seike Plug Agyemang Void
Brighton & Hove Albion demonstrated they can cope in the absence of their temporary forward Michelle Agyemang, even after suffering a defeat to Manchester United. The forward was ruled out for the season last week after sustaining a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament while representing for England. There was some concern about how Brighton would cope, but the experienced forward and Kiko Seike proved they are fully equipped of making up the goals by scoring in the 3-2 defeat. “We responded quite well to start,” the Seagulls' head coach, Dario Vidosic, remarked. “We improved into the game, we got our pressure more effectively. More positive, once more. We might have added a couple more goals in the later stages. Facing a strong defensive unit, to create all the opportunities we managed in the match was encouraging, but we need to be more clinical.”
Rehanne Skinner Takes Positives Following Defeat at City
West Ham's coach found optimism from her team's display against Manchester City, despite a single-goal loss. While her team, at the foot on goal differential, have not secured a point, they adopted a positive approach and did not shy away from taking on City. A lack of ruthlessness was West Ham’s undoing at the Joie Stadium but it is a matter of time before they get a positive result. “It's frustrating we’ve failed to gain something from the game, and after all the minutes the players have had during the international break the mindset and determination from the players [was great], and the fortitude as well,” the manager noted. “We must change our fortunes.”
Everton Escape Self-Sabotage with Gago Double
A 94th-minute leveller by Kelly Gago saved the team's blushes as they shared the result in a high-scoring encounter at Villa Park. The French forward notched the first goal with her maiden strike of the season after a strong Toffees beginning. Villa equalised shortly prior to the break. The second half was action-packed, as both teams capitalized of the opponent's leaky backline. An unlucky deflection by Ruby Mace tilted the momentum the home side's way, putting them 3-2 up, but Gago arrived for the Merseyside club's aid after Brian Sørenson’s side had missed opportunities on multiple openings. The team's streak without a league victory now stands at six matches.
Partnership's Spark Aids The Gunners Find Form
Arsenal recorded their third straight victory in all competitions as Stina Blackstenius scored twice and the England forward added one more in a 4-1 thumping of Leicester. It was a second start of the season for the attacker, who set up her strike partner to give the Gunners ahead, then, following a the defender own goal, ended her five-game drought with two goals of her personal tally. Arsenal have appeared not quite championship challengers but a first-half rampage by the forward and Blackstenius created chaos and unleashed the slick and bold style that most people anticipate considering the team’s quality. “We had some new partnerships in the lineup in this match as well, so that requires time to gel,” said manager, Renée Slegers, “but I think it did really well, particularly in the opening 45 minutes.”
