Uche Fuels Comfortable Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure straight passage to the last 16, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
