A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
