Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.
