"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several famous supporters have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly feature them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to form a group."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Award Recognition

The trio have called into home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record was born from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes follow breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their top focus.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
